She sorted through the collection of vials crowding below the mirror, plucking out a clear vial with a green fluid, ‘green dreams.’ A powerful sedative, extracted from stone fish venom, a poison brewed with exotic corals and sheer malice.

Storch smeared a little too much of the ointment across her stinging gums. The throb of her ulcers blissfully numbed, and she exhaled, embracing the floating warmth spreading through the rest of her body. Storch, now warm and heady, gazed at her made rack. She had no real desire to attend the blessing of the voyage tonight. She had sent the royal tailors packing when they darkened her cabin with several ridiculous outfits, of mermaids, sea nymphs, and a mockery of reef hags. Would anyone notice if she just crawled into bed? She had several books on loan from the royal university, and was halfway through a fascinating chapter regarding syphilis, titled ‘A night with Venus, a lifetime on Mercury.’ No chance, she thought.
